Pig Roast #8
So we took three pictures of the pig, a couple of the kids on the porch and then the battery on the camera said it was low. It was 10am and I was like - "No big deal we'll just charge the battery and be set." Well the camera got plugged in and we completely forgot about it - so here is a list of hilarious things we SHOULD have taken a picture of:
Picture #1: Slater using the easy spout on the lemonade dispenser to fill the dog water dish, the water table and several unsuspecting guests drinks **sigh** When they are quiet and you are busy, sometimes you just hope they aren't up to something. It is difficult to scold and giggle at the same time, several guests pointed out that it was nice that it was pink lemonade, so at least he didn't appear to be peeing in all those places **sigh**
Speaking of peeing, we have been doing numerous Alaskan-outdoor-activities and Slater has learned to use the outdoors as a toilet since we are often miles from any kind of bathroom. In spite of numerous reminders that he was to pee inside while we had company, he watered the lawn and bushes through out the party (too much lemonade). **heavy sigh**
Picture #2: The kids high-fiving each other after helping stock the drink coolers. Here is a shot of them pre-stocking.
Picture #3: The 20 or so kids that attended the party playing beautifully with one another. Such a wonderful bunch of kids having a blast in the yard. We have taken a picture every year and I am truly sad that we didn't get one this year :(
Picture #4: My Dad taking a big swig of Mike's hard lemonade - thought it was the kid strength stuff - oops!
Picture #5-100 All our great friends gathered in groups chatting and eating 137 pounds of pig!!
Picture #101 The superintendent of schools and the former FEA president having a chat on my front porch.
Picture #102 The delicious pig meat coming off the BBQ. Hmmmm, pork belly, ham, pork loin, all cooked in bacon!

Can I talk to her?
Star Wars, Star Wars and more Star Wars ... that is pretty much what we hear about around here on most days.
So ... when the awesome Wishcraft costume catalog arrived AND it had an entire page dedicated to Star Wars, well we knew that something was going to get ordered.
In the past we have not told the kids what we are getting them for their birthday or Christmas, but I wanted to make sure that I ordered the one that Slater wanted the most and I really wasn't sure which one that was. There were a variety of competitors - Commander Fox, Captain Rex, Anakin Skywalker, Yoda and Jengo Fett. After careful consideration and discussion, Jengo Fett was selected.
Now I explained that this was a magazine, so we would have to call, order the costume and then wait for them to deliver it in the mail, which might take several weeks. I did this promptly, since we live in Alaska and that always takes extra time. This concept did NOT make sense to Slater, once he had selected the costume he thought we should just be able to run down to the store and get it. Actually, as soon as he selected the costume he put on his shoes brought me mine and said, "Come on mom, lets go get my Jengo Fett." I explained the reality of the situation again, but it still wasn't making sense to him.
This went on for quite a while (long enough for me to grind my teeth whenever he mentioned it). So I patiently said, "Remember Slater, I called the lady on the phone and ordered it."
Slater grinned and held up a finger, "I got an idea Mom."
"What is that sweetheart?"
Slater walked over and grabbed the phone, "Can I talk to her?"
It was such a grown-up thing to say, but I didn't really want to call the company and bother someone while they were at work. Lucky for me I have lots of fabulous mom friend who are always willing to help out. The conversation went a little like this:
Slater: Hey lady (yeah apparently we need to work on phone manners)
Sam: Yes sir?
Slater: I want a Jengo Fett costume!
Sam: Alright sir we will send you one, it will be there on Friday
Slater: Thanks ... bye lady.
He actually did not mention the subject again for over an hour! Even better is the fact that I can now say - "Well, what did the lady on the phone say?"

Sweet BABY Jade... turns 2!!!
Guess I am going to have to stop calling you that some day, but not today!!
Cupcake creations! Each guest got a carrot cake cupcake of their own to decorate with frosting, sprinkles, glittery tubes of icing, jelly beans and giant cherries. Here is the birthday girl with her own creation.
Stick the sticker on the cupcake. Jade in her party dress and Slater with his newly acquired light-saber. Most of the guests had trouble with the blindfold and took it off to place their stickers - they enjoyed the game anyway :)
Giant cupcakey goodness! Two candles for the sweet baby - homemade carrot cake soaked in buttermilk glaze and topped with orange-cream-cheese frosting!!
Celebrating two is pretty darn great!
Tried to upload the video-footage of singing and Jade blowing out the candles, but it won't play!

Giggle, giggle, giggle ...
Jade's new phrase I want a ... for my ...
A few (and it is only a few) examples:
I want a bike for my butt.
I want a banana for my mouth.
I need a lollipop for my hand.
Mommy, can we go to Barnes and Noble?
I want a brownie for my mouth!
With each of these statements comes the emphasize of her little hands pointing at where she needs the mentioned item. Makes it difficult not to giggle and give her exactly what she is asking for.

Trouble on the first family boat ride

Due to a small oversight on the Captain's part the engine compartment flooded! It was an exciting couple of minutes while we pulled to shore, got the kids to the safety of dry land and figured it all out. In spite of all of the colorful language the Captain was spouting the kids don't seem to have picked up any new vocabulary ;)

More twins!!
A mama moose and her twin calves made a short visit to our yard this week. Who needs to visit the zoo?
Byers Lake ... it's raining it's ... fun?
4th of July weekend was a wee bit wet! Spending it in the best of company made it worth while.
Canoeing with the Bredlies on Byers. The Sorich clan packed a canoe and were kind enough to let us borrow when they were out on a hike.
The rain started Saturday night at 8pm and continued heavily until 11am the next morning. We took pity on some of the soggy tenters and invited them in for a morning of Dr Suess and Cheerios.

Checking out Mt McKinley from the viewing platform. Yup that was the best view all weekend.
Jade's favorite walking partner.
After cheerfully refusing a nap earlier in the day the littlest camper passed out shortly into our hike to the suspension bridge.
Aunt Kelly looking angry about the bugs! They were fierce and we has to sprint to out run them.
Chicks Rule!! That says it all :)
This is what good camping trips are all about.

While visiting Anchorage we stopped at three households with twins and a sibling. My kids probably think other families only have kids in pairs!

Lake trout VS baby grayling
Fishing is one of the main activities that we engage in at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Grandpa was out waiting for a client and caught two beautiful lake trout, which the kids were fascinated with. After seeing the large lake trout every grayling was deemed a "baby fish".

Enjoying the moment
After 10 days on the road we are home. The kids had a great time, but didn't get the sleep they needed and last night they crashed. At about 7:30 this morning I heard Jade muttering and went to grab her.
Her warm little body cocooned against mine, she snuggled and twitched for a minute and then contentedly settled into my arms and fell asleep. Half of her blond head was wild and tangled, the other half silky soft and emanating a baby fresh scent. Her dark lashes brushed against her rosy cheek and seemed to extend out impossibly long. With eyes still closed a smile broke across her face and a giggle escaped her lips - what was this happy dream she was having? Everything about my baby seemed so little girlish, could her body really be half the length of mine already? This sweet little thing has been mine for nearly two years now and I am so grateful for these moments of bliss where I can hold her in my arms and memorize every feature - I will never get enough of them.
This morning I had nearly an hour before the "big" kid joined us and proclaimed his sister "a cutie sleeping baby." Even with the invasion she slept on completely relaxed and trusting in my care. When she finally succumb to her brother's commotion it was with a sweet and contented look that said everything was just-right in her world.
To more mornings like this one!
